Suzanne Evans, who has been employed by the Kings Park Central School District as a teacher for the past eight years, was honored by the Kings Park Fire Department on March 21, 2007, for her quick actions in executing a Heimlich Maneuver on a choking student. Ms. Evans, during her last period class on January 2, 2007, observed one of her students exhibiting the tell-tale signs of choking: that of an abnormally white face and unable to speak or breath. She immediately performed a Heimlich Maneuver, learned some 10 years earlier as an undergraduate student at SUNY at Plattsburg. The victim coughed-up a piece of candy that had lodged in his throat. Suzanne Evans' skilled response spared her seventh grade pupil possible physical trauma, or death in the worst-case scenario. The Fire Department, under the leadership of Chief Steve Butler and President Edward Cuff, recognized the honoree by presenting her with a formal proclamation.
